Whether you’re new to buying headsets for your office or if you’re a seasoned pro, it can be a little confusing when it comes time to decide on a specific headset type.

Philosophies vary when it comes to making this decision. One approach is to decide on one specific model and deploy that across the enterprise. For some, this might work, for others, they don’t care to deal with the complaints nor spend the time about the headset style not working for different team members. No matter what your approach, you will need to make the call and there isn’t one right answer either.

This blog is intended to simply give you a basic view of the different styles that are available today. Whether your choice is for a wired headset solution or that of a wireless, it still comes down to making a decision based on the available choices.

OVER THE HEAD SINGLE OR DOUBLE EAR

Whether you’re exploring wearing styles in the wireless realm, or those in the wired headset space, its very common to seriously consider headsets that are worn over the head (headband style). Over the head wearing styles come in two flavors. The first is an over the head, single ear type, commonly called a “monaural” headset. Simply stated, it offers a single ear speaker and it can be worn over either ear, left or right. For many, this is a common go to product as it meets the needs of a lot of people.

The second type of over the head headset is referred to as a “binaural” headset.  As the name implies, it offers two ear speakers unlike its monaural cousin. This can be a great option if you work in a busy call center, noisy office or just prefer to reduce unwanted background noise.

OVER THE EAR

Wired and wireless headsets are available in an over the ear wearing style. For many, this is a preferred headset because it tends to be smaller, less obtrusive and for those who spend time in the morning working on their dew, it won’t mess up your hair. Unlike the over the head types, an over the ear headset is more technical in regards to getting a proper fit. Ears are like fingerprints, no two are the same. Some ears come in the economy size while others are, shall we say, jumbo and of course, all sizes in between. That said, an over the ear headset isn’t suited for everyone because you may find that they simply won’t stay on or feel secure while worn. Should this be the case, you’ll want to look at some of the other headset types.

BEHIND THE NECK

This particular wearing style is more uncommon than common perhaps due to it not being advertised or promoted as much as others. It’s the perfect choice though for those who cannot find a good fit in an on ear headset or for those who get headaches from wearing a headband style headset. Check with your headset provider for more details if this is something of interest.

CONVERTIBLE HEADSETS

No, I’m not referring to your Mustang with the drop top. Within the context of headsets, I’m referring to a model that can be worn over the ear and then “converted” to a different wearing style. Most commonly, from over the ear to over the head. Convertible headsets come with ear loops as well as a headband. Some models even include a behind the neck-band as well, giving you three distinctly different headset wearing experiences. The advantage of this model is a high level of acceptance when deployed, especially meaningful when deployed across a large enterprise. Convertible headsets allow you to start off with one wearing style and then change it up with something completely different. Maybe you develop a sore ear or maybe you discover that you’re getting headaches from the headband. No matter, you have options and that’s the key advantage of selecting this style of headset.

As you can see, there are a number of different headset styles to choose from. Finding the type that’s just right for you or your staff simply takes some time, thought and consideration. When you get close to making your choice, don’t forget that you can always try these headsets out prior to making a final decision. By doing so, you can rest assured that you’ve made a solid decision and one that’s just right for you.
