No matter your reason for looking to buy a Plantronics wireless headset, you’re to be congratulated for taking that step. Wireless headsets help you in a myriad of ways and they’re all good. Studies show that you’re more productive when you use a headset and studies also show that you reduce muscle tension that can lead to physical ailments. Who needs a pain in the neck, right? You’re probably getting that already from that boss you don’t like.
The intent of this blog is to give you something to think about and compare when considering a Plantronics wireless headset. As good as Plantronics headsets are, have you considered other brands such as Discover to determine if your decision to buy a Plantronics headset is your best play? Continue reading below and you’ll receive some helpful information that might surprise you.
What are you looking for in a new wireless headset? You’re likely looking for a headset that sounds good, is comfortable, has a battery that gives you a good amount of talk time and has a decent warranty in case you need to exchange or replace the headset. Along your buying journey, you’ll likely consider the price of the product as well. Everyone likes a good value, right?
Let’s make a quick comparison of two popular wireless headsets. The Plantronics CS510, over the head, single ear wireless headset and the new Discover D901 over the head, single ear long range wireless headset. Let’s see which headset is truly the best value.
Both of these excellent headsets have similar features, but when you drill down, you’ll see differences that could sway your decision.
Wireless talk range. If you use a wireless headset, you can’t have too much wireless talk range. As the graphic below shows, here’s the first of a few key differences between these two products.
This is one of the biggest differences between these two headsets. The Discover D901 (single ear) and D902 (double ear) headsets use a newer technology that provides longer wireless range. This is helpful if you work in a large office and find yourself away from your desk a lot. Maybe you need to go up or down a floor in your building or back to the warehouse. Having a long-range wireless headset can really make a difference. Though the CS510 is a very good headset, it can’t compete in talk range with the Discover D901. Warranty. Most would agree that when it comes to a warranty, longer is better. If you’re of that mindset, then the Discover D901 notches another advantage over the Plantronics CS510 wireless headset. On the subject of warranty, the Discover D901 includes advance replacement which means that if a replacement is needed, it will be sent out in advance of receiving the defective unit back. This means quicker turnaround time and less time you’ll be cradling the phone on your shoulder as you wait for the exchange.
Talk Time. Getting a little extra juice out of your wireless headset battery can be the difference between making it to the end of the day, or not. All wireless headset manufacturers will state their talk time as “up to” X hours. The amount of talk time will be lowered if you’re using a the headset in wideband as well as if you’re using the headset a far distance from the headset base. Both activities require more power and as a result, lowers the number of hours you can get before a recharge is needed. To read more on wireless headset talk time go here.
Connectivity. Both of these popular wireless headsets will do a superb job when connected to a desk phone. You’ll have comfort and great sound quality. The Discover D901 has a notable advantage over the Plantronics CS510 in that it connects to a desk phone AND to a PC. Some ask the question, “why would I need my headset to connect to a PC”? The answer to that question is based on the direction of technology. More and more we’re using our computers for web training, video meetings such as Skype for Business etc., even listening to your favorite music while working are all accomplished by having this computer connection. Also, if your company is planning on moving over to Softphones, the Discover D901 helps to future proof you. The D901 is a product that simply and quickly migrates from desk phone conversations to PC based conversations with no additional purchases or accessories needed. Advantage Discover!
The Money. These days, prices are all over the map making this difficult to nail down. Above, you’ll see the manufacturers suggested selling prices, but in the real world, as we all know, either model might be the better priced product of the day. That said, I gave no price advantage to either model as they’re comparable.
Collaboration. Most office wireless headsets have the ability to join multiple headsets on to a single phone call. By doing this, you establish a decentralized conference call with all parties being hands free, wire free and mobile. The Discover D901 can join up to 3 participants while the Plantronics CS510 can join up to four. The advantage here goes to the CS510 if your needs call for 4 conference attendees.
Comfort & weight. When it comes to wireless headsets, weight does matter. After all, most people who wear one will have it on most of the day making the weight of the device important when it comes to comfort. As you’ll see above, the Discover D901 is notably lighter when compared to the Plantronics CS510. If having a lightweight and comfortable wireless headset is important to you, then the D901 would be a better choice.
PermaPair. This is a unique feature found only on the Discover Wireless Headsets. This feature differs from the conference feature and allows you to permanently pair up to 3 headsets to one base. You might be wondering, “why would I want to do that?” Good question! Here’s how this feature could be used in an office. Let’s say you have a Receptionist and he/she is out. You need to have one or more people “cover the front desk”. In this case, you’d pair two additional headsets to the front desk headset base and when the phone rings, the two people who are covering will hear a beep tone in their headset. Either can press the answer button on their headset allowing one of them to take the front desk calls. Best of all, the people covering the front desk can be at their desk. This same process could be used in a number of places within most companies.
The Plantronics CS510 and the Discover D901 are both very good wireless headsets. Selecting either model is a safe and sound decision. Both will sound great, both headsets will be comfortable and give you reliable service for years to come. As I’ve outlined in this blog, you can see though that there are a number of differences between these two models. If you’re looking for a name brand product and are willing to disregard the additional capabilities offered by the Discover D901, then the Plantronics CS510 would suit you very well. On the other hand, if you want a longer warranty, three times the wireless talk range, more connection options and a longer battery life, then I need to introduce you to your new phone partner, the Discover D901 Long Range office wireless headset!
