Simple things you can do to eliminate static on your wired and wireless telephone headset.

If you work in an office and use a telephone headset throughout the day, you know what challenges and hassles a headset with static can cause.

You want to hear and you want to be heard without crackling. Crackling is fine if you’re pouring yourself a bowl of Rice Krispies, but not so fine if you’re on an important phone call.

This blog is designed to give you some of the leading reasons for static and a few tips on what you can try to help eliminate static from your wired or wireless office headset.

WIRED HEADSETS. Static can be caused by a few things with shorts in cords and cables being a leading reason for that undesirable crackling and popping in your earpiece.

Static is commonly caused by a short in a cord. As you can see in the graphic above, a short can occur in many places. Specifically, in the cord on the headset, at the QD connection on the headset, the amplifier connector cord or even at the amplifier coil cord (at either end).  Roll over a cord with a desk chair or pinch a cord in a desk drawer can both be causes for a short to occur. Twisting a headset cord around your finger repeatedly can also result in static. This being a surprisingly common activity.

The image above shows a Plantronics M22 amplifier to help illustrate two additional things you can do to help rid yourself of headset static. Old batteries can cause a variety of issues and the compatibility button, when in the wrong setting, can cause static, echo, feedback or even no sound at all.  Most all commercial grade amplifiers use AA batteries and have a compatibility adjustment so if your amplifier isn’t a Plantronics brand, it likely uses batteries and has a compatibility adjustment too.

WIRELESS HEADSETS. Wireless headsets can experience static for a number of reasons. Some include:

  • Compatibility button being in the wrong position
  • A short in the amp to telephone interface cable
  • Out of range
  • Very low battery or a bad battery
  • Wireless headset charging base being too close to the telephone
  • Interference from other devices 

Compatibility Button. Whether you use a wired or wireless headset, having the compatibility button in the right setting is critical in assuring optimum sound quality. Check with the manufacturer or contact us and we’ll be glad to help.

Short in a cord. Anytime there’s a cable involved, you always want to wiggle the cord to see if the static increases or decreases. If so, that’s telling you that the cord is bad and needs replacing.

Out of range. All wireless headsets have a limit on how far they go. Once you’ve reached the outer boundaries of what it can provide, it’s normal to experience static because the signal is weakening and can no longer maintain the call with good sound quality.

Battery. Compromised batteries or bad ones can cause problems in headset performance. In general, batteries in wireless headsets should be replaced every 12-24 months in order to assure that the headset is receiving the needed amount of power to operate correctly.

Headset base too close to phone. Some headsets can be affected by having the wireless headset charging base being too close to the phone. If you have static in your wireless headset, try moving the base away from the phone and then make a test call. In some cases, this will fully resolve the issue.

Interference. Wireless headsets broadcast on a wireless signal and can get interference from other wireless devices. Some of these devices include wireless networks, wireless routers, microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices and more. New wireless headsets are less susceptible to being interfered with as they utilize DECT technology which was not used in older models. If you have static in one area within your office but not in others, then this is likely the issue.

Whether you have a wired headset or a wireless headset, you don’t want static. Still, you may have a short in a cord, you might have your compatiblity button in the wrong setting. You might need to replace your battery and something not mentioned as of yet is you might have a faulty speaker or microphone. If so, check to see if the headset is in warranty and request a replacement. Generally speaking, wired headsets carry a two year warranty and wireless normally offer a one year warranty.

If you use a wireless headset and experience static when away from your desk, it could be your headset isn’t up to the job you’re asking of it. If you have a wireless network, routers etc your static might be coming from that due to interference. Even a simple thing like moving your headset charging base away from your phone can help improve static as well. If none of these options clear up your static, try removing the battery and unplugging the power from the charging base.  Wait a few minutes, reinstall the battery and plug the power back in. This too may help eliminate static. Lastly, if you use a Plantronics CS50 or Plantronics CS55, here’s information on pairing your headset because it could have lost connection which can give you static.
