Review Of The Plantronics CS510 Wireless Headset

CS510 Review (1)

One of the most popular wearing styles among all headsets is an over-the-head style. Possibly because they’re easy to put on and take off and they’re stable when worn. These headband style headsets cover either one ear or two (mono or duo). In this blog, I’m going to provide a review on the Plantronics CS510, monaural, office wireless headset. I’ll give you my views on the pluses of this popular headset and also the minuses. After all, there’s no such thing as a perfect headset, right?

The Plantronics CS510 is a direct replacement for the Plantronics CS351N. The headset top has remained pretty much the same, but the base has been upgraded in form and function and for the better. The improvements engineered into the new CS510 helped to make a good headset even better. Check out the pluses and minuses of the CS510 as I see it in the information graphic below.

Plantronics CS510 wireless headset

There are a lot of things to like about the Plantronics CS510 wireless headset. It has a battery that’s rated at 8 hours of talk time in the wideband mode and up to 13 in narrow band. That’s solid and exceeds most battery talk times when compared to other headsets in this class.

The CS510, though a bit bulky, is still pretty comfortable when worn for extended periods. There are other, lighter alternatives, but the weight of the CS510 at 74 grams       (2.6 ounces), it wears well because it’s designed well. The ear cushion is soft and somewhat oversize, which works well to deliver comfort to an otherwise aching ear.

In today’s business environment where PC applications in the office are rapidly expanding, it would be a nice upgrade to see this headset with PC connectivity. More and more people are doing desk top video conferencing and more people are receiving training through on-line sources, webinars etc.. Employees stand to benefit from a wireless headset that not only connects to a desk phone but to a PC as well. If you want a dual connectivity wireless headset in the Plantronics line, you need to move up to the Savi 710 that features desk phone, PC and Mobile phone connectivity. If that’s a bit of an overkill, you can check out the new Discover D901, long range,  dual connection wireless headset.

There are a number of other features that help to make the Plantronics CS510 a wireless headset well worth your consideration. Among them include the simplified process to pair the headset to the base, auto on / manual on feature, secure fit and the ability to conference in up to 4 total headsets on to a phone call. I’d list the noise canceling microphone here but anymore, this is expected on any good quality, commercial grade office headset.

Here’s one little known fact you should know about the CS510.

Plantronics cS510 ear plate

What is this you ask? This is the ear cushion ear plate. The part that the ear cushion wraps around or mounts to, which in turn, snaps on to the earpiece of the CS510 wireless headset.  If this comes off and gets lost or broken, the part isn’t replaceable. What’s the big deal you ask?  Without this part, there’s no way to get an ear cushion mounted on to the CS510, leaving you with hard plastic up against your ear. How’s that for all day comfort?

Okay, okay, the battery takes a while to charge (3 hours) which is a bit long for the industry, the headband can give you that stylish “dip” in the center of your hairdoo that you’re looking for and the wireless range is average at best compared to other models in the industry. With all that said, it’s pretty hard to knock the CS510 because these drawbacks aren’t overly significant in the grand scheme of things.

If you’re after a good, basic, over-the-head office wireless headset that connects to a desk phone, I’d highly recommend the Plantronics CS510. It’s well made, it’s stylish (as headsets go), comfortable and it sounds great. Plantronics is known for making good quality products and the CS510 is a shining example of this.
